Firearm Safety Rules

Safety should always be your top priority when handling firearms. Follow these four fundamental safety rules:

  1. Treat every firearm as if it’s loaded: Always assume a gun is loaded, even if you believe it’s not. This mindset prevents complacency and careless handling.

  2. Never point your firearm at anything you are not willing to destroy: Keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction at all times. This rule minimizes the risk of accidental injury.

  3. Keep your finger off the trigger until you are ready to shoot: This prevents accidental discharges. Only place your finger on the trigger when you are ready to fire.

  4. Be sure of your target and what is beyond it: Know what you're aiming at and what lies beyond your target. This ensures that even if you miss or the bullet passes through the target, it won’t hit anything unintended.

Understanding the Rifle and Scope

Before diving into the shooting process, it's important to understand the basic components of your rifle and scope.

Rifle Parts:

  • Barrel: The long metal tube through which the bullet travels.

  • Stock: The part of the rifle that rests against your shoulder.

  • Trigger: The mechanism that releases the firing pin to ignite the cartridge.

  • Bolt: Used to load and unload the cartridge in bolt-action rifles.

  • Magazine: Holds the ammunition.

Scope Parts:

  • Objective Lens: The front lens that gathers light.

  • Ocular Lens: The rear lens through which you view the target.

  • Turrets: Adjustable knobs for windage and elevation.

  • Reticle: The crosshair or aiming point inside the scope.

Fundamentals of Shooting

Mastering the fundamentals of marksmanship is key to becoming a proficient shooter. Here are the essential elements:

Stance: A stable stance is the foundation of accurate shooting. Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart, slightly leaning forward. Your body should be balanced and relaxed.

Grip: Hold the rifle firmly but not too tightly. Your support hand should be under the forearm of the rifle, and your shooting hand should grip the stock with your finger off the trigger.

Sight Alignment: Ensure that the front sight and rear sight (or scope reticle) are properly aligned. For scopes, this means centering the reticle on the target.

Sight Picture: Combine sight alignment with the proper positioning of the target. The target should appear clear and centered within the sight or scope.

Breathing Control: Control your breathing to minimize movement. Take a deep breath, exhale halfway, and hold your breath briefly while squeezing the trigger.

Trigger Control: Squeeze the trigger smoothly and steadily. Avoid jerking or slapping the trigger, as this can throw off your aim.

Follow-Through: Maintain your shooting position and sight picture until the shot is complete. This ensures that any slight movement doesn’t affect the shot’s accuracy.

How to Properly Zero Your Rifle

Zeroing your rifle means aligning the sights or scope so that the point of aim matches the point of impact at a specific distance. Here’s a step-by-step guide to properly zero your rifle:

  1. Prepare Your Gear: Ensure your rifle, ammunition, and scope are in good condition. Use a stable shooting rest or bipod to minimize movement.

  2. Set Up Your Target: Place a target at the desired zeroing distance, typically 100 yards for most rifles.

  3. Initial Bore Sighting: Bore sighting helps you get on paper before fine-tuning your zero. Remove the bolt and look through the barrel to center the target. Adjust the scope turrets to align the reticle with the target.

  4. Fire a Group: Fire three to five shots at the target, aiming at the same point each time. Check the target to see where the bullets hit.

  5. Adjust Your Scope: Use the scope’s turrets to adjust windage (left/right) and elevation (up/down). Move the reticle in the direction you want the bullet impact to move.

  6. Fire Another Group: After making adjustments, fire another group of shots. Repeat this process until the point of aim matches the point of impact.

  7. Confirm Zero: Once you’re satisfied with your zero at the initial distance, confirm it at other distances to ensure consistency.
